George Carrick raced Post Classics, 250 Production and 250GP machines. He competed in these classes at Club, State and National Level and was a very competent “A” grader as well as a top bloke. He was very popular with other competitors and had a very keen sense of what was right and wrong as well as fair play. Unfortunately, George was killed at Broadford State Motorcycle Sports Complex in 1992, and as the GP class was his favourite it is a fitting tribute to a wonderful race that this class is named in his honour.

KEN KAVANAGH

The Ken Kavanagh Award is awarded to a Hartwell Club Member for outstanding achievement overseas. Usually, to a rider that has strived to achieve in Australia and has pursued this passion by going to great lengths by racing overseas.  Ken Kavanagh passed away in Bergamo Italy in 2019, well into his 90’s. He remained in contact with our club up until a few years before his passing. He was a small and feisty man who left home when his Father objected to him getting a motorcycle. After a period of success in Australia, he went to Europe and the GP circuits, living on start money and prize winnings. His greatest success was winning the 1956 Junior Isle of Man TT, although he is also known for being one of 8 Australians to win 500cc GP races and only one of 4 to win more than 1.

David was a keen young road racer whose machine and riding gear was always spotless and beautifully presented. He was just coming back from a serious racing accident when he was involved in a fatal road accident. He was always a perfect gentleman and a highly regarded sportsman. This perpetual trophy awarded in David’s memory is presented each year to a rider that epitomises the same values.

The Greg Bailey trophy is contested at Club level by expert, some non-expert and several selected novice riders. The Perpetual trophy is the actual cup awarded to Greg in England for his 3rd place in the Shell Championship in 1977. Greg was a keen club rider who moved to the UK to compete. The Greg Bailey event is very competitive within the Club and riders of the highest calibre competing to win this prestigious event. For those of you that don’t know the history, Greg sadly died in the Derby Royal Infirmary as a result of an accident at Donnington Park Race Circuit in November 1978 having collided with another rider during an event. Hartwell Club members donated a large sum of money to Greg’s Mother to enable her to travel to England in the hope that her presence would assist Greg to come out of his coma. Unfortunately, he failed to ever regain consciousness. Greg was sponsored by VIC Camp of VIC Camp Motorcycles in Walthamstow and was a great favourite of the many fans who attended English race meetings. Wes Brown, Club Secretary at the time had the honour of presenting a trophy to the winner of the BBC sponsored race to honour Greg Bailey at the Brands hatch circuit in 1980.  Wes was also interviewed on the same day by the BBC commentator and was able to spread the name of Hartwell Motorcycle to a big audience.
